The Challenge

The young homeowners wanted a complete kitchen transformation to replace the builder’s grade kitchen in their home. According to Houzz.com, the #1 reason homeowners choose to remodel their kitchens is “can no longer stand the old kitchen.” This was the #1 reason for these clients also.

• The sink was situated awkwardly in a corner
• The had no island and wanted one to give them more work areas and storage
• The trash container was in the dining room. They wanted it in the new kitchen.
• The clients didn’t like the floor, the soffit or the ceiling fan.
• Existing kitchen was dark and cramped.
• Homeowners wanted a kitchen transformation that would accommodate their lifestyle and reflect their taste.
• They wanted their new kitchen to be light, bright and modern.

The Design Solution for the Kitchen Transformation

The homeowners, their contractor and kitchen designer decided to take down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the space. There were two sets of sliding doors to their deck, one in the kitchen and one in the dining room only six feet away. We decided that the two sets of doors were redundant. The kitchen doors were removed to make room for more cabinetry. 

To free up more prep and clean-up space, we moved the sink and the window and centered them on the new countertop. The new stove and sink wall is located where the sliding doors to the deck had been previously. 

The island is “business in the front and party in the back”. Drawer storage and microwave are on one side and seating on the other. 

Soffits were removed to give the kitchen higher wall cabinets for more storage and topped them with crown moldings. The new floor is hardwood. 

The transformed kitchen’s focal point is the beautiful custom hutch, with its mirrored fish-tail mullion doors. 

The homeowners chose transitional-styled cabinets from Brighton in classic white paint for the perimeter. The doors feature recessed panels and polished chrome hardware. The island with turned legs is finished in gray paint. The countertop is Dekton white with gray veining. And they chose a gray crackled backslash tile, with a basket weave pattern behind the range. 

The Wrap Up/After

The new kitchen resolved all the issues and satisfied the homeowners. They now had plenty of counter space, which simplified cooking and clean up. Seating at their new island is great for socializing with family and friends. Now their children can sit at the counter for casual eating, do homework and crafts.

And yes, they got pull-out trash storage in their beautiful new kitchen.
